National Pollinator Week

PennDOT, PA Turnpike Highlight National Pollinator Week

Harrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PA Turnpike) are recognizing National Pollinator Week with updates on pollinator plantings around the state.

 

Roadside pollinator plantings, led by PennDOT, PA Turnpike and other partner organizations are taking place around Pennsylvania. PennDOT has overseen more than 40 acres of pilot pollinator plantings with an additional 25 acres of habitat in progress. Areas targeted for pollinator-specific plantings are continually monitored by maintenance teams for the presence of invasive species and weeds as well as healthy growth and pollinator activity.

 

In addition to plantings, PennDOT seed mixture updates took effect earlier this year. Seed mix updates removed notable non-native and invasive plants and added pollinator-friendly plants such as black-eyed susans (Rudbeckia hirta), ox-eye sunflowers (Heliopsis helianthoides) and common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca).

 

“The degradation and loss of pollinator habitats is a risk to those affected species as well as pollinator dependent crops across the state,” said PennDOT Executive Deputy Secretary Cheryl Moon-Sirianni. “We invite every Pennsylvanian to join us in their own gardens, or with PennDOT through the Adopt and Beautify program.”

 

The PA Turnpike has piloted five pollinator habitats across the state. Within those locations there are 19 different plots for a total of over 10 acres which utilize a variety of seed mixes and management practices. These plots include many of PennDOT’s seed mixes of 16 different native plants. The seeds include an array of native wildflowers like lanceleaf coreopsis (Coreopsis lanceolata), mint plants like anise hyssop (Agastache foeniculum), herbaceous perennials like milkweed species (Asclepias sp.) and wild bergamot (Monarda fistulosa), as well as the flowering plant foxglove beardtongue (Penstemon digitalis).

 

“Pollinator habitats provide an array of colors and fragrance,” said PA Turnpike CEO Mark Compton. “But more importantly these natural gardens, comprised of native plants, promote, protect and preserve pollinating animals.”

 

PennDOT’s Pollinator Habitat Plan, adopted in 2019, is operated in partnership with other federal and state agencies, private and community organizations, to create naturalized gardens and meadows planted with pollinator-friendly plant species at designated sites. Highway rights-of-way have been recognized nationally as lands that have potential to provide habitats for pollinators and support corridor connectivity for pollinators.

 

In November 2022, Act 112 established the Pollinator Habitat Program Fund to be supported in-part by purchases of the new Pollinator license plate PennDOT announced earlier this year. The fund will create naturalized gardens and meadows planted with pollinator-friendly species of flowering plants specifically for bees, butterflies, beetles, and other insects which may have been adversely affected by the loss of their native habitat. Sixty-five percent of the proceeds from the license plate will be deposited into the Pollinator Habitat Program Fund.

 

The Pollinator license plate is now available for passenger cars or trucks with a registered gross weight of not more than 14,000 pounds. Applicants for the Pollinator license plate must submit a completed Form MV-911, “Application for Special Fund Registration Plate.” More information, including eligibility requirements and image of license plates, is available on the Registration Plates page on PennDOT’s Driver and Vehicle Services website.

 

National Pollinator Week is recognized internationally during the last full week in June as an opportunity to spread awareness about the importance of pollinator species to the eco-system and promote native pollinator gardens.

 

Habitat loss, fragmentation and degradation, increased pesticide use and introduced diseases are threatening pollinators around the world. Native pollinator-positive plants are a critical link in Pennsylvania’s eco-system providing habitat for pollinators like butterflies, bees and hummingbirds to support crops and local biodiversity.

 

If you’re interested in taking part in Pollinator Week, please consider planting native pollinator-friendly plants. Additionally, interested citizens can apply to the PennDOT Adopt and Beautify and Keystone Pollinator Habitat programs to get involved locally.

Park Ave & Ferry Rd Water Main Replacement Update

Notice from North Wales Water Authority Regarding the Water Main Installation on Park Avenue and Ferry Road:

Please be advised that the water main trench on Park Avenue has all base repairs completed, the contractor will be proceeding to install water main on Ferry Road starting on June 7, 2023, and which work will proceed over the next several months.  While the Ferry Road official detour and closing is between Swamp Road (Rt. 313) and Park Avenue,  the initial work zone will commence at Park Avenue to Old Iron Hill.

The current work will take place M-F from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM until such time that the school season has ended at which time they anticipate working from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

Sunset Ave repaving delayed trash pick-up

Due to repaving on Sunset Ave. today, Tuesday, June 6th, Republic Services was not able to gain access to that street for trash & recycling pick-up.  Republic will be coming around early tomorrow morning, Wednesday, June 7th, to service anyone on Sunset Avenue who was missed.  Please leave your toters curbside so you don’t miss the early morning pick-up.

Republic Services First Trash & Recycling Pick-Up

Borough residents, the first trash & recycling pick-up with Republic Services will take place tomorrow morning, Tuesday, June 6, so please remember to put your toters curbside tonight. Going forward, TUESDAY will become the new weekly residential trash & recycling pick-up day.  If your Waste Management toters haven’t been collected yet (and you haven’t already notified the Borough office) please do so, 215-822-7295.  You can also send an email to: info@chalfontborough.com

Chalfont Challenge 5K and Fun Run on June 3, 2023

Reminder that the Fun Run and 5K races take place tomorrow – Saturday, June 3, 2023, at 40 N. Main Street.  The one mile Fun Run begins at 8:00 AM and the 5K begins at 8:30 AM.  Road closures begin any time after 7:15 AM and continue until clean up is completed, usually until around 10:30 AM.  Please plan your morning accordingly.  If you know you will need to travel tomorrow morning during the road closure times and the closure will impact you, move your car this evening to a street that will be accessible.  Parking tickets will not be issued in the Borough tonight (Friday, June 2nd) to accommodate these situations.  Race Map

Borough Newsletter & Trash News

Please see page 2 for information regarding the Borough’s new residential trash & recycling hauler, Republic Services, that affects Chalfont Borough residents only.  (Just because you have your postal mailing address may contain “Chalfont, PA 18914” that doesn’t necessarily mean you are a Chalfont Borough resident – this information ONLY applies to Chalfont Borough residents.)  Waste Management’s contract with Chalfont Borough is expiring and Republic Services will become the new residential trash & recycling hauler.

If you are a Borough resident and you received an invoice from Waste Management (WM) for the upcoming quarter, June 1 through Aug 31, do not pay that invoice because it was an error on WM’s part.  WM will not be providing service into the next quarter because their contract is expiring.  If you have auto-pay set up with WM, please log into your account and cancel it so you are no longer billed.  If you already paid an invoice for the June 1 through Aug 31 billing period, contact WM for a refund.

The last trash pickup with WM will be on Friday morning, June 2nd.  Put your WM trash & recycling toters curbside (even if they are empty) the night before and then leave them there.  After WM empties them on the morning of June 2nd, they will send another truck around later that day or the next afternoon to permanently remove them.

Your first trash & recycling collection day with Republic Services will be on Tuesday, June 6th.  Thereafter, TUESDAYS will be the new weekly trash & recycling pickup day in Chalfont Borough.  Republic Services has told the Borough office that they will be mailing out invoices in the week or two following their toters being delivered.  Please call the Borough office with any concerns.  Please also be patient as staff works diligently to solve any issues that may arise during this transition period.  Please refer to page 2 of the newsletter for more information:  Spring 2023 Newsletter

Waste Management Billing Error

It was brought to the Borough’s attention on May 16, 2023, that Waste Management (WM) may have mistakenly billed some Borough residents for the next quarter (June 1, 2023 to August 31, 2023) despite WM’s contract with the Borough ending with their last pick-up on Friday, June 2, 2023.  If you received a bill from WM for billing period 6/1/23 to 8/31/23, do NOT pay it.  WM said this billing error occurred for a large portion of Borough residents, but not everyone.  WM has assured Borough staff that it was an unintended mistake, and if a resident does mistakenly pay this bill, they will be refunded, so please contact them at 1 (866) 909-4458 to have this corrected if you already paid this bill.  If you have autopay set up with WM, it is advised that you log into your WM account and cancel your autopay arrangement immediately and check your records to make sure you weren’t charged for this period.  Once again, if you find that you were charged and paid for the June 1 through August 31 billing cycle, contact WM for a refund. WM apologizes for any inconvenience as they actively work to correct this billing error situation.  WM’s final trash & recycling pick-up date is Friday, June 2, 2023, so place your toters curbside (even if empty) on Thursday evening, June 1, and they will be emptied the morning of Friday, June 2, and then collected/removed by WM either later that same day or in the day or so following, so leave them curbside until WM removes them permanently.

Republic Services will be the new contracted residential trash & recycling hauler for Chalfont Borough and their first pick-up will be on Tuesday, June 6, 2023, and TUESDAY will become the new weekly collection day thereafter.  A service list of addresses used by Waste Management was supplied to Republic Services for the purpose of setting up your account in advance.  Republic Services will be dropping off their new toters to residents sometime during the week of May 22, 2023.  Republic’s first invoice to residents was going to be mailed the week of 5/15/23, but Republic informed Borough staff on 5/16/23 that they were able to delay that first invoice until after their toters have been delivered.   For those residents who are aged 62 and older that had been receiving a senior discount from Waste Management, it is advised that you wait until after receiving your first invoice from Republic Services to see if you were “grandfathered” into the senior discount, and if not, please call their customer service department at 215-723-0400 to arrange for this.  Proof of identity/age/address may be needed.

Blue Envelope Program by CBPRD

The Central Bucks Regional Police Department is proud to be joining the “Blue Envelope Program” which was created to help those with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), as well as Police Officers in the event of a motor vehicle stop.

Created in Connecticut, and recently adopted by the Perkasie Borough PD, the program’s primary goals are to aid ASD drivers with document organization and to educate them about what to do and expect during a motor vehicle stop, so that the motorist, as well as Police, have a beneficial encounter. The envelope will hold a color photocopy of the individual’s driver’s license, vehicle registration card, insurance card, and an emergency contact card.

“Our Department has adopted a proactive approach to educating Officers about autism through ongoing training on how to recognize behavior/signs displayed and responding accordingly. The Blue Envelope Program is a way to reinforce this training and assists an ASD individual to know they will be treated with tolerance and understanding,” stated Chief Karl Knott.

Blue Envelopes are available at the Central Bucks Regional Police Department’s headquarters, located at 229 N. Broad Street, Doylestown, during business hours M-F 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM.
